The infant has a very limited ability to move independently. It cannot lift its head, which is particularly important when sleeping and resting in a lying position. The baby should not sleep on a conventional pillow. A normal pillow for a baby should only be used from the age of 12 months. A wedge is a product that will help especially in the event of leakage or breathing problems.
Pillow for the baby
Doctors recommend that newborns and infants sleep on a firm, flat surface at least until they are 12 months old. Earlier use of pillows can be dangerous as it:
- forces a position not recommended for infants,
- increases the likelihood of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS),
- increases the risk of choking.
Wedge pillow
The wedge pillow is a product which is made of foam. The specially formed support in the shape of a flat triangle lifts not only the head but the whole body of the baby without pulling the chin to the chest. The wedge is placed under the child's mattress. One of the indications for using a wedge is reflux, which makes it difficult to have a peaceful sleep. The wedge is placed under the mattress to prevent the stomach contents from flowing backwards and to reduce the risk of choking. The wedge can also be used in the event of breathing problems or a runny nose in children.
A slightly tilted position on top of the mattress is recommended for the comfort and healthy development of the baby. The most important advantages of the wedge are:
- Reduced risk of choking,
- Reduced tension in the baby's neck area,
- Prevention of spinal and cervical disorders,
- Improved sleeping comfort,
- Relief of breathing when the baby suffers from a runny nose.
